I have a question to ask about BIPOLAR DISORDER?

One of my friends is bi-polar he has not taken his medicine for awhile and had problems with substance abuse,he is now in a mental and substance abuse hospital to stabilize him. My question is ,he wore a disguise to meet me at the airport,the next day lied and told me he was in jail,Not true,Because I called. I recognized him but pretended that i didnt because of his mental state. Can bipolar disorder make a person act this way?
