Antiquing help pls! How do I get the stain to stay in the grooves?

I am trying to antiquing some cabinets. I painted them white with a semi gloss finnish. Now I am using stain to antique over the paint but every time I practice the stain moves out of the grooves I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but it looks horrible when it starts to dry and the whole point is to have the stain puddle in the recesses. I cant seem to pull it off. Thanks!
